Caraval
Caraval by Stephanie Garber
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This was my second fantasy novel, and I loved it to pieces. The idea behind the game was so appealing to me. The novel has a eerie vibe about it, but that's totally fine by me. The small life lessons, the intricacies, and everything in between were all like a chef's kiss. Tella was a free spirit and wild card who wanted more from life than just following the rules, while Scarlett was such a worrier and concerned about doing the right thing that she never really lived and stood up for herself. Despite their stark differences, they brought out the best in each other.
There were so many supporting roles in this book, and I think they all played such a big part in the story coming alive and making it so magical, Nigel happened to be one of my favorite side characters and the mystery surrounding Legend only led me to being way more curious than I thought because they spoke so highly of Caravel and just made it so believable. I kind of wish it was real in a way without dying, I would have played in the game if I was in that world. I loved Julian’s character and everything that happened although my feelings for him were giving me so much whiplash it was worth it and I loved seeing Scarlet’s character development throughout the story, she really became the person she needed for herself and Tella.
Overall, I can't recommend the book enough! There was nothing I didn't enjoy. Every twist, and turn, every piece of magic was perfect for me, if you love games, carnivals or as much as I do, you should absolutely read this. If you want to escape reality and become entirely immersed in a fantasy world then this is your sign to read it and that ending just solidified the fact that I need to get the next two books ASAP I will be getting the next two books together because I cannot wait anymore.
