The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times
The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times by Michelle Obama
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Memoirs terrify me since I feel like they can be hit or miss for me. I had not yet read this book that my mom had brought over the summer, but since I had resumed my reading, I felt it would be a nice place to start when diving into the memoir genre.
I'm glad I did.
Although the book is officially a self-help book, it initially gave the impression that it was more so, and I was curious in how she applied it in her daily life. Towards the third chapter she starts describing how the techniques she used enabled her to overcome her experiences. It was all uphill from there once that section of the book got going. Nevertheless, this was a great book, and I truly wish I had read her first memoir, Becoming, first. Although the book is officially classified as self-help, and at times it does feel that way, the author's description of her upbringing and experiences simply demonstrates her wisdom and knowledge and attempts to impart it to her readers.
From her childhood on the South Side of Chicago, through her time in college, and finally to her final visit to the White House. Everything is included; she even goes into great detail about her relationship with her husband and the difficulties they have had during the years of their partnership. She also shares experiences of her girls' upbringing and development into the young ladies they are now. Understanding how we as humans attempt to deal with circumstances or any challenges in life in similar ways or how we might change how we deal with them is insightful coming from another person.
