All the Bright Places

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This novel came out years ago before it became a Netflix movie during the epidemic, and honestly, the movie did the book justice... the book has varied ratings, which I understand but don't agree with. It is not for the weak or those who have never met or seen someone suffering from mental illness, or who have never experienced it themselves. It's delicate... and not to be taken lightly, but if you've known someone or have any experience with someone you know or yourself, I believe this book is as accurate as it gets. People don't see what's wrong with other people because they put on their best happy face and don't know how to handle it when things start to fall apart.

People are comparing this to the television series '13 Reasons Why' and let me just say that I despised that show... it glamorizes suicide and the scenario the lady was in ugh... like I said, if you've ever known someone or dealt with it on your own, that is not how one handles those circumstances. This book is the polar opposite; while it discusses mental illness and how it affects people, it also depicts the terrible reality of it. The cruel reality is that parents, siblings, friends, teachers, and many others can miss the warning signs.

Anyway, the characters, the plot, the story line... I was truly captivated by the relatability. This is also a mixture of emotions and you should be prepared for the ride... definitely worth the read.
